@Bridget: Apparently they are working on the release, but they’re appears not to be a specific date yet. Here’s to hoping! Thanks for remembering! 😂

Hi There!

My husband loves the Italian gangster movies, me thinks I’ll grab Carlitos Way for a nice stocking stuffer since it’s a great 4k upgrade!

Any news Lady Phantom on The Godfather’s being released on 4k? I remember that was one of your most wanted movies on 4k?

Dollar Tree just had their new movie drop last weekend. Actually found Arizona on 4k. I know your review was less than stellar on that one, but for $1 I'll give it a try. Definitely worth trading it in for more than a $1 for a good title 👍

@Shawn: Such a bummer about Ghostbusters 1984. I have actually heard there the new one is really good; I wouldn’t mind watching it at all!! Thanks for letting us know about it!

Hope you guys had a nice Holiday. Grabbed some 4k deals, including Ghostbusters 1984. Grain heavy, blurry and an almost kaleidoscope effect at the beginning. Might be a more technical term but that's what it looked like. Colors do look brighter, more vivid and the close ups look decent, but that's about it. Such a heavy layer of grain, can't really recommend it, even at $10 on sale. C-
Ghostbusters Afterlife is pretty awesome. Nostalgia Bomb if you're a fan of the original 9/10

@Shawn: Glad you liked the episode!! I’m not gonna lie, Howard was hard to watch until the end. But it was for you, so it was worth it. Nice Game of Thrones reference (I think it is, anyway; Bill doesn’t)!
As for Snyder, I just don’t get it. I mean, if you want to show more, just do IMAX and be done with it, but don’t chop the sides of the screen!! I’ve been flirting with the idea of watching Tenet, but it’s one of those movies that just doesn’t appeal to me. I don’t know.
You should definitely watch Chaos. It’s a lot of fun. We’ll see you soon!

LAUGH OUT LOUD! I literally yelled YES, in my work van when you said my name since I knew what was coming. I'm 44, so when this came out I was very young. I do remember watching Howard several times on cable as a kid. I obviously rewatched it when I got the 4k. I absolutely agree it's a terrible movie. Even worse than I remember. Growing up in the 80s, cheesie B movies were a way of life, especially a lot of horror movies that I love. Cheers to you guys for sticking through it. I will pay my debt. A Taylor always pays his debts, 😉. Full disclosure, I can fly for almost nothing so it may happen sooner rather than later. Howard the Duck 5/10 Borrow it from a library LOL
Snyder and Nolan. Boy oh boy. The decisions they make really baffle me. I don't understand why they artistically continue to piss their fans off. They do such great movies and then we get 1982 Tv screen for JL and Tenet which is one of the WORST movies I've ever seen. Was Snyder trying to invoke some nostalgia for the Super Friends cartoon? If so, it failed miserably. I did like all the added scenes, but it was very dumb to be in 4:3. JL Snyder Cut 8/10 Buy
I wanted to see Chaos Walking in theater but never made it. I'll have to check it out. Looks and sounds interesting.
Great ep as always. Looking forward to the next one. Fedex will be very crazy till after xmas, so I'll see you guys in Vegas 2022 🤙

@Shawn: Ooh that’s a toughie for me. Since Zombie is a pure 70’s masterpiece to me and on my Top 5 horror movies ever made list, the uptick in resolution, coloring and detail on the 4K Disc is worth the bold price tag of the release. The HD Blu-ray wasn’t nothing to write home about but was better than the prior releases on all other formats. I will leave you with this; if Zombie is one of your faves and you watch it every year or so then grab the 4K, if not, for that incredible $12 dollars go with that deal.
Shawn Taylor Shawn Taylor from Indy wrote on October 10, 2021 at 3:21 pm
Wanted to pick up Fulci's Zombie and ran across the triple disc set for $12. Wondering if you guys had it and if the Blu-ray was comparable to the 4k. I listened to your review again, so I figured I would probably be good with just a Blu-ray with 4k restoration, especially at only $12 🤷‍♂️

@Lemarcus: Well, now you’re just looking for trouble! 😂 We’re glad we made your morning. As for a Halloween episode, we shall see!

@Shawn: Nice comments! Actually, I think Sharlto and Diego were the best things about Elysium. I didn’t like Jodie at all; she seemed too stiff. Maybe it was the character; who knows. I kind of agree on the Quiet Place comment, although I did love the opening of the movie. And, Bill says you’ve got a deal on Howard the Duck! 😂

@Jeffrey: You’ll absolutely love The Thing. AQP2 is pretty good too, although I think the 4K is a touch below the first one. Thanks for listening, and let us know how you like them!

What a pleasant surprise, new ep! Happy to hear the gushing over the Thing 4k from YouTube wasn't all BS. This close to Black friday I'll prob wait, but I'm down for an upgrade. Always happy to support 4k horror. Life long comic book fan, so anything Marvel I'm down for. I'm with Lady Phantom, not the best MCU movie but still really good.
I'm right with you guys on Elysium. Great concept, mediocre movie. I really like Sharlto Copley as an actor. He was the best part of this one to me. Matt Damon was miscast badly.
MIB Intl was a turd. They tried to cash in on 2 MCU actors and failed miserably.
Quiet place 2 was good, saw in the theater. I did like it more than the 1st. I will say Krasinksi needs to work on his subtlety in horror. Seems very big on big openings and and endings. Maybe leave a little something for the middle. Also maybe don't focus too much on stuff like the towel on the door. That was obviously a plot point without slapping you in the face with it.
Great ep as usual. Btw, where's the Howard the Duck review LOL? Actually, if Bill agrees to sits through the whole movie, I'll fly out to Vegas and buy dinner 🤣

Just watched Expendables 4k. Visually it was pretty average. Constant grain. Some blurry scenes and also some very detailed close ups of the actors. Atmos sounded good. At least till my wife came home and asked me to turn it down LOL. Anyway, I already had the Blu-ray and I doubt the 4k is much better, been awhile. I'd say skip the 4k, unless you get the 3 pack cheap like I did, $12. Otherwise stick to Blu-ray. C-

Latest pick ups. Universal doing it again. Howard the Duck and Gattaca. Look Howard is a part of Marvel and it was $10. So shut up LOL. Setting aside the cheesy CGI, it actually looked really good. Pretty frustrating that this cheese fest gets a solid 4k and much, much better movies don't. Which is where Gattaca comes in. This movie has always looked odd. Kind of a muted look to it, I assume trying to convey some futuristic sanitized look. Either way, very average 4k with constant grain. I doubt you would notice much difference from the Blu-ray

@Shawn: Hehe… we don’t have any Criterion stuff. They’re way overpriced. We are not really enthusiastic about their 4Ks, really. They probably won’t look much better. But, we will see, you never know maybe they will surprise us.
Shawn Taylor Shawn Taylor from Indy wrote on August 17, 2021 at 8:50 am
Now that Criterion has jumped into 4k, are you excited that their big library is now available or more leery because the price will no doubt be very high? A standard Blu-ray from criterion is $30-40. Other than the DVDs I've found at goodwill for $1-3, I've never paid sticker price. Always wait for the 50% off sale. Most of their current Blu-rays have a 4k restoration so, I guess, they just need to format it to a 4k with less compression. I recently watched their Blu-ray of Fast Times at Ridgemont High. I didn't own a previous Blu-ray just the DVD. Definitely looked better than DVD, but no idea if it was an overall improvement 🤔

@Shawn: I heard about the Bruce Lee bit. It was really funny in my opinion, and it was actually partially based on a true story. I read that after glee fought with the other guy, he actually got together with him to learn from him, so that’s cool. I think the people who complain about that fail to see that Once… is NOT a true story, but more of a “what if…?” and quite a few parts are more like a parody. In any case, that Bruce Lee bit is great and hilarious in my opinion.
I love Grease, just like I love many musicals. I get what LaLa Land was trying to do, but I just don’t think it landed. Sweeney Todd is actually very good even though Johnny and Helena can’t really sing! 😂
We have covered a few boutique discs; off the top of my head, Zombie (Blue Underground), Tremors (Arrow) and Elephant Man (Studio Canal). We typically don’t do Criterion Blu-rays. We’re not big on special features unless we absolutely adore the film, the price just don’t warrant it.
Shawn Taylor Shawn Taylor from Indy wrote on July 29, 2021 at 10:52 am
@lemarcus Yeah, it's a bummer Wonka is a garbage 4k. Glad you waited.
I had zero interest in La La Land. Seemed very pretentious and self serving for La and Hollywood. Glad to know my shallow opinion was warranted. I also avoided Once upon a time in Hollywood for mostly the same reasons and I heard bad things about how Bruce Lee was depicted. Bill I have a love for Grease but I wouldn't dream of requesting it(4K isn't too bad fyi). Family story behind why, I normally don't go for musicals. Although I liked Sweeney Todd with Depp, so maybe I do LOL.
Btw, have you guys ever considered covering some of these Boutique (criterion, arrow and Shout/Scream factory) 4k transfer Blu-ray discs? They charge massive amounts of $ using the 4k transfer as an advertising tool IMO, but only using a Blu-ray not a 4k disc. I wouldn't expect you to buy a lot of them, maybe if you already had some in your collection. Looking forward to ep 100 🤙

i think was generally good when you have the nostalgia factor is hard to rate fairly and i think you two did a wonderful job for me it is a strong 8 but a 10 for timelessness for the older generation

i am fairly new to the 4k stuff value your opinions grandly this one hurts me as i was hoping for a good disk i would have upgraded this one from my dvd right away sad to hear it is one of the worse disks

@Shawn: I’m sorry about wounding your soul! However, I stand by what I said. The perfect version for me would be the remake (without the filler scenes) but starring Gene Wilder. Not because I didn’t like Johnny, but because Wilder was just better. Johnny was fine; nowhere as weird and crazy as that Fear and Loathing. Anyway, it’sa shame the release wasn’t better!
Shawn Taylor Shawn Taylor from Indy wrote on July 26, 2021 at 2:00 pm
As always I appreciate you guys covering my request. I first saw Willy Wonka around 6-8yo in the mid 80s, I'm 44. I just remember being so mesmerized by the idea of winning a chance to tour a famous chocolate factory. I did appreciate it even more as an adult. Picking up on Wilder's clever lines and sarcasm. I absolutely agree he was the focal point of this movie. Lady Phantom you wounded me even mentioning the travesty that shall not be named with Depp. I put that mess up with Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. I'm going to stand by my F-. I compared it to my 40th Anniversary box set Blu-ray and yeah maybe the colors look a little better, but for the 50th Anniversary on 4k, I still say its crap. The only time I really noticed any real difference was the Wonka letters lighting up on the factory smoke stack, during the scene with the creepy old man giving his speech to Charlie. BTW, the TV sequence I thought was the worst. The grain was so heavy in that scene. Anyway, I Completely agree with Bill, such a wasted opportunity with the color pallette in this movie. Real shame

Paul Williams is a whoot in this and his father big Enos played by Pat McCormick from Get Smart+History of the world Part 1. Williams is talented did you know he is perturbed by being known for this role when he is a multifaceted guy? Have you seen The phantom in paradise? Check it out.

Sheriff Jackie and son are dastardly funny some of the lines crack me up to no end. What a brilliant combination. My favorite part is at the Puke diner lol when Jackie walks in and the bandit talks to him. That scene is hilarius.

This one is underrated to the max in cinema. You never hear it talked about, I’m tickled you guys covered it. Dam bumber the quality is D. I’m still buying it though to support 1970 movies like this. Long but NOT FORGOTTEN.

Yeah, I check Amazon periodically. They have price drops randomly. The Cornetto 4k trilogy was $20 same time as The Mummy. Probably should've grabbed it too. Dealers choice on the trilogy for a review sometime 🤙
Lady Phantom Lady Phantom from Las Vegas wrote on July 22, 2021 at 1:55 pm
@Shawn: The Mummy trilogy for $20? That’s a great deal! I enjoy those movies a lot, even if they’re not the greatest. They’re a lot of fun! And you’re right, if you only had the DVD, the 4K is definitely fine.
Shawn Taylor Shawn Taylor from Indy wrote on July 22, 2021 at 1:48 pm
Well, there's 1 of the universal releases I mentioned. I almost bought S&B during prime day recently. It was only $10. But I've been pretty disappointed with older releases lately. Then you guys had a good run of universal reviews and I found S&B for $10, again, at a local resell shop and grabbed it. Well we know how that turned out. Luckily I only had the DVD so, its better than that, mostly 😅. I love the movie, big 10-4 on that!
Spoiler alert, the other one was The Mummy(1999), got the 4k trilogy for $20. Worth the risk. Like I said before I enjoy silly action movies almost as much as horror. Great show as always 🤙

@Lemarcus: You’re welcome, it is our pleasure. You will have our opinions on Homecoming reasonably soon, funnily enough. As for the Legend of Tarzan, I think I vaguely remember they released it, but nothing else!

Thank you once again for covering one of my requests! I'm sorry the movie didn't connect with you. I thought it might be safe for a blind buy considering that Jay gave it an 8.5 and buy on MPW. I felt it was more around a 7 and B-. I hate to do this to you BillChete, but when I find a good price again I plan to pick up Spiderman: Homecoming. It'd be great if you two could cover that movie!
Also, I borrowed The Legend of Tarzan (2016) recently and the 4k looked great for the most part. There's were scenes of brilliance in the 4k, but then also some poor cgi to drag it down. It mostly shines in the audio department. The movie itself, just ok. You really have to suspend your disbelief in this one at times. But going by your system, I might lean B+ and 6. If you get a chance take a look/listen at the 4k!

I do enjoy a good brainless action movie like the Mission Impossible series. I have Fallout on 4k, got it cheap used. BTW, good tip for new 4k owners, unless you want the digital copy, buying used can save you a lot of $. Digital collectors sell them off minus the code. Gotten several around $10 or less. Also I picked up a couple Universal 4ks and I'm sad to report they aren't great quality. Won't spill the beans which ones in case they're upcoming but even Universal has Heavy GRAIN. Unless you're into that sorta thing 😏

I regret not getting the Best Buy steel books of each. Not because I am a steel book collector, although I love my game of thrones set, but because I hate the standard group packaging of the discs. They really crammed them in the case. I usually try to buy box sets of individual cases for each movie.

Sam Sam from Snomonton wrote on June 14, 2021 at 3:29 pm
Thank y’all for reviewing Brawl. On the note of “aimed to be a horror movie”. All of his work tends to have horror incorporated aspects, but are not purely horror. With the exception of Asylum Blackout and Puppet Master. His latest crime novel The Slanted Gutter is a perfect example of a crime story with heavy horror components. But like Brawl, by no means a horror story. Mean Business on North Ganson Street is another great example. His 2 western novels are a little more horror driven, but The majority of A congregation of Jackals is closer to a drama/a 3rd act Horror.

I hope his other and future works gets a 4K release and that more effort is put into those discs. Thanks again for reviewing Brawl!

Now that you graded many catalog titles from the 80’s and above I think the choice is clear——They are mostly unworthy of seeing-buying. The outliers——2001 Odyssey-T2. Now I agree if it’s a favorite movie of yours possibly to gain a infatesimal uptick in quality may warrant the 4K specifically for features or maybe even a new sound production. Hence Beetlejuice I will not be purchasing as it’s an okay movie surely not a go to movie for me.

I can see Waterworld being a love it or hate type movie. For me I was stunned it never received much praise. I personally thought it was epic especially for the time period. It’s an 8 out of 10. I know it’s not a demo disc but since it’s a favorite I want to eke out the best version possible.

@Shawn: Hm, I’ll have to check out the deleted scenes, then. And yes, definitely, to each their own. It was too over the top for me, but then again, I’ve been known to enjoy over-the-top stuff before… Thank you so much for the request!
Shawn Taylor Shawn Taylor from Indy wrote on May 16, 2021 at 9:03 am
Pretty sure I 1st saw Waterworld at the drive-in, which back in the day, where I saw most movies. Didn’t own the blu-ray, so this was a pretty big step up from anything else I’ve seen, cable etc. I didn’t want to say my neg until the review and I had pretty much the same ones. The green screen scenes are bad. Thought the close ups and the swimming lesson scenes were pretty amazing.
Far as the movie is concerned, Lady Phantom, we like what we like. Dennis Hopper has been the weird hippie guy pretty much every movie I’ve seen him in. Sometimes it worked, others not so much. This was basically Mad Max on the water, so an over the top dictator was appropriate to me. I have seen the deleted scenes or the extended cut, same things I think, and really the very end of the movie is the only part worth watching. Fills in a blank Lady Phantom mentioned. Overall glad you guys enjoyed the 4K as well as I did. Cheers

So happy to hear a review on Gattaca. Been on the fence about buying it on 4k. Seen it many times. Great movie. Shout out to Karl, he gave me some good advice when I was setting up my new system a few months ago. Since you guys mentioned it, I'm having a hard time buying into Atmos too. I have a decent amount of 4ks and I have a hard time picking out much overheads. One of the youtubers mentioned it's a significant cost to put an Atmos track on a disc, so why not use it to it's fullest extent 🤷‍♂️

Shawn Taylor Shawn Taylor from Indy wrote on April 28, 2021 at 4:43 pm
I Love Logan. I grew up reading the comics and Wolverine was one of my favs. I even talked a non movie buddy to go see it with me at the theater, on release weekend, and he really liked it. I don't get the B/W versions of newer movies. Mad Max Fury Road has a B/W version too. Maybe because Logan was around 200yo in this movie 😀.
Been many moons since Ive seen Gremlins. I still remember it all. It's fine 80s fun to me. If you haven't seen the sequel, they actually poke fun at the 3 rules, especially the midnight one. Kinda 4th wall breaking. It's even more over the top and ridiculous. I actually like it more than the original. They even manged to get Christopher Lee to be in it. Probably had to back up the Brinks truck LOL

I grew up on Gremlins so it does hold a special place in my heart. When I showed my kids this one they didn't really like it. Since I watched it recently with them it doesn't hold up 37 years later. Still though Gizmo is adorable.

That's a drag that the 4K is that bad because I think a lot of people will buy this movie but I will send everyone I know to your podcast to get the real scoop before they do.

Thanks for the Gremlins review! I totally disagree about the film itself but that's fine as its the 4k part that mattered to me so I'm definitely keeping my boy ray disc which looks good & comes in a sick package! About Logan I say I'm disappointed in the film & the 4K as definitely overrated on both accounts and I still say we never got the Wolverine film we deserved. His quick cameo in apocalypse is the wolverine movie we should've gotten. You guys should definitely do more movies in a franchise since you're producing 4k reviews at such a fast pace that seems you're gonna run out of 4k discs to review. Also with movies you guys bought on 4k like gremlins that you didn't like maybe you can do a contest or something to give those films away to your fans though to me Phantom & Bill you're my friends 💛

@agc: Glad you enjoyed the review! Yes, I have already watched it. I subscribed to HBO for one month specifically to do that, lol. It’s actually very good, and quite different. As you can expect, the colors are somehow toned down. Cyborg is much more prominent, as is the Flash. Barry’s scenes aren’t comedic anymore, and he does look like a super hero, not like a lost child. Actually, his scenes are incredibly badass. Steppenwolf’s reasons for getting the boxes make more sense, and his animation is WAY better. Since it’s rated R, they don’t hold back when showing killings and blood. The soundtrack is completely different. So basically, both versions are good for their own reasons, although I did like Zack Snyder’s cut a little better. Thanks for listening!

I first found these Youtubers a Canadian guy and another a Brit and they claim how amazing movies are with grain and rate them high and I am thinking these people must be shills for the 4K releases. What in the world are they talking about glorious grain hahahahaha what jokesters. You guys are the only ones that are honest, accurate, and detail each and every 4K to a Tee. Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As you wish BillChete. The movie that I wanted to send your way was "The House With A Clock In Its Walls." I watched about half of it in the theater but the child I was with got a little scared so we walked out. Hadn't seen it since until I found in on Gruv for $12.99 in 4k ($14.99 Amazon also). I did pick up 2 copies at that price just in case but I can find a home for it. My novice eyes thought it looked and sounded great in 4k! It's not quite Lucy level great, but it was great. Thanks for all you do as always and can't wait for #4!

Hello,

Y’all pitch perfect on 300 4K. I bought this movie on release day for $29.95 at Walmart and it has sat on the shelf since then. I was expecting a beautiful rendition of colors and hdr and got barely any. Your expertise of the video and audio I’ve found completely accurate.

My personal ratings,
300 movie, 6
300 4K, D

Thanks, Lynette

The Purge franchise lasted long than anyone I think would suspect. As with most sequels they go down the more there is. Even the big boys that we call classics now suffer the same fate. The funny thing is that most still embark some level of entertainment for the ones that imbue the franchise.

That is ultra nice of you Lemarcus, but believe me, both of us are honored at doing requests no matter what the movie is, we are having an amazing ride on this podcast, so.......throw out there another request Lemarcus, you don’t have to send us a movie, we will cover it, it is our pleasure. @U-Mom-Me: I think if you like Joss Whedon’s style (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Avengers), it is worth checking them out. If you think you’d like something that could be described like a western in space, go for it. You could just rent one or two episodes, and if you like it, watch all of it. It did end soon, but they knew they would cancel the series, so it’s not like others that have ended in cliffhangers. Serenity does give nice closure. Thanks for listening!

@Shawn: We couldn’t agree more, Shawn. I think being okay with a lower quality, grainy 4K image sends studios the wrong message. Why put more effort into the production of a 4K disc if reviewers are going to rave about grainy movies, and say they’re stellar? I still can’t get over all the hate that Terminator 2 has gotten from 4K reviewers, just because it looks amazing and they corrected errors in the original movie. Shame on them. If we want good quality, we shouldn’t set for less.
Thanks you for being such a loyal listener; we really appreciate you!

My feeling on grain. I've lived through Beta\VHS, CED and Laserdisc( although I never owned either), DVD and now BLU-RAY/4K. Just feel like I've seen that quality of movie at home. 4k to me should be a whole new experience, especially at the prices of discs and TVs. Older movies can look amazing and should, without an abundance of grain or that "filmic" look. If you're happy with movies looking like an older format wkth a slight improvement on quality, I believe that tells the studios they can get away with minimal enhancements to a 4k master and just push out low quality 4k discs. You can pop a DVD in your 4k player and get almost the same result. Film studios charge $15-20 more for a 4k disc, they should earn it

Thanks for doing this review for me! Safe to say I totally disagree with you both on all aspects of the film but that's ok though u guys said some blasphemous stuff lol. I do like the 4K better than you guys as well. I would've chosen Jedi which I love & like more than Empire but the 4k isn't as strong though still great. Definitely not asking for rogue one which is the start of Disney raping star wars. Frank Oz isn't dead btw. Irvin Kershner also directed Robocop 2 which I think is a fun sequel. i know ur busy with other requests so when you get the chance please review Gremlins, Beverly Hills Cop & Beetlejuice on 4K so I can know if they're worth getting since I have the blu rays of them already. No rush just some distant request. Thanks again you're both much appreciated!!

I'm loving the wide range of movies you''re covering on the podcast. It's a good grade of B- on Empire but I bet the newer films would look way better than the 70's-80's cinema. I haven't had the will to start collecting the series's yet it can get expensive quick once you start down the rabbitt hole.

I think Mortal Engines suffered from the same problem as John Carter. Little known source material and actors. I really liked the John Carter book series and the movie was good. Shame Disney didn’t continue the series. I’m not familiar with the Mortal Engine book. Didn’t even know it was from a book, which kinda proves my point

The family never heard of this Mortal Engines. It sounds fascinating indeed. I told my husband about your top score and he exclaimed “get it now if BillChete and Lady Phantom graded it that high!”

Now on my internet shopping it’s sold out on Amazon, geez don’t see that too often. I was relegated to a used copy on Ebay. I snatched it up without a digital code for $12.75 plus shipping and tax so not to bad.

John Goodman deserved an Oscar nod for this movie for sure!!! Even though it's not his genre, I think you guys are doing BillChete a disservice by not doing the Marvel movies in order. At least that way I figure it'd be easier for him to follow along. As far as new requests go, what would you say about Ratatouille? It's going for $20 Wal-Mart/Amazon right now. John Goodman was INCREDIBLE in this role, without him it would of been a dud. I'm in the same nostalgia boat with Tremors. I would have saw it when I was 13yo in 1990. To look at it critically would be like Gordon Ramsay judging a PB&J from the gas station, what's the point. That said I get the you are critics and I can't argue anything you said. Gremlins, Ghoulies, Critters, House, Evil Dead 2, Dead Alive and others like it, you know what it is and If you're down for it you love it.
Also I'd like to memtion these boutique studios "remastering" old cult or obscure movies. Yes you get a ton of feelies, posters blah blah, special features and most importantly the hope of an awesome 4k disc. I love the 80s movie RAD and bought the 1st EVER disc release from Vinegar syndrome on 4k. Awesome packaging has the extras and the 4k is crap. I'm very happy I have it, but if companies like VS and Arrow are going to charge $50+ for these 4ks, they had better step it up on the disc quality. I had a eBay bootleg that was just slightly worse than the 4k.

I’ve been wanting to post on the guestbook for awhile. I absolutely love the podcast. I’ve been a listener forever. Was so excited when you returned to HMW podcast, and though I’m sad to not hear you there, I’m grateful to listen to your 4K podcast.

I’m a Tremors fan. I’m not going to try and defend the movie. I get why it got the rating it did. I believe, for me, it came out at the perfect time. As a pre-teen I was fascinated with this movie. The graboids were the epitome of practical effects and my 9 year old eyes were covered for half the movie.

I don’t think I’d have the same appreciation seeing it today. But I can’t help but continue to watch it through nostalgic goggles remembering the days that my cousins and I would watch it on repeat as kids. It had such an impact that we continue to drop lines from the movie.

Classifying it as horror is such a disservice. If anything, it’s an adventure, comedy. Even this classification doesn’t do it justice unless we think about the target audience. Kids watching this as an intro to horror are sure to love it.

As always, I completely respect your film criticism and will probably end up listening to the episode a few times. Thanks phantom and chete for the ongoing work you do. I absolutely love it!

@Clezzington: Aww, don’t sweat it. We are all entitled to not having heard about a movie! I’m glad you enjoyed the episode. David Bowie was actually a pretty decent actor; he was in a horror movie called The Hunger that I really enjoy. Thank you again for commenting!

I haven't had an opportunity to watch it myself yet but I'm glad to hear that it's gotten a decent grade from you two! I watched this in theater back when it came out and it actually made it into my top ten that year lol... It just hit something for me. I, like you two, am not a fan of country but I let that slide. Glad you two at least thought it was above average. It was beaten by "Sing Street" and "The Nice Guys" for me that year! Thank you once again for covering it and thank you as always for the content!

@ezekial: Yeah; I was moderately skeptical about it because whenever people tell you “it’s the most terrifying thing since...”, or that it’s the scariest film of the year, or whatever thing like that, it’s usually not. It has very good things, but it’s definitely not THAT good. Definitely not scary. And with all that “extra” added, it’s not anything I want to watch again. Thanks for listening!

@Tony: Yes indeed, a Rambo is forthcoming soon! Empire Strikes Back is about a month out but it is our pleasure covering it per your high recommendation on 4K. Vigilante and Zombie will probably be tough to find on streaming because of the age, they were both put out by Blue Underground and you don’t even get a digital code with the 4K Disc purchase. @Sam: Aww! Please don’t get us wrong; we did enjoy the movie more than the rating we gave it. I think it showed on the podcast. However, we need to be fair and take into account technical aspects as well, not only enjoyment. Sad to hear y’all didn’t enjoy Vigilante as much as I did. But I do understand your low rating vs level of enjoyment watching it. I often cannot separate the 2. Some scenes are quite memorable and horrific, my wife definitely struggled with watching the mother and son being tormented.
I’m a big fan of the Maniac cop trilogy, yes even the 3rd. Also Maniac and Uncle Sam are favorites of mine as well. I’m newer to the 4K realm and get the qualms against it. Thank y’all for reviewing it, much appreciated!

BillChete BillChete from Las Vegas wrote on January 23, 2021 at 10:30 pm
Hi Shawn,

We connect the HDMI directly to the receiver, for two reasons. 1) When you go directly to the TV, then to receiver you have a possibility of a lip-sinc issue, HDMI is sometimes finicky with certain TVs. 2) A lot of 4K TV’s don’t process Atmos, DTS:X and even 7.1 or 5.1, meaning when you go out from the TV to your receiver you will not be getting the highest possible audio to your Receiver. Now, newer premium TV’s, within the past few years have included it but still you want a flawless audio signal directly to your Receiver.

Since your Receiver has Dolby Vision and HDR10 go there first it will only pass-thru that video signal to your TV with zero degradation. The really only reason to go to the TV first is if you don’t have those HDR specs on your Receiver, lack HDMI inputs on your receiver, or don’t want to always listen to Discs throughout your sound system.

It’s great your getting a stand-alone player as you will see an improvement over the X-Box.

Thanks for reaching out and we appreciate your contribution!
Shawn Taylor Shawn Taylor from Indianapolis wrote on January 23, 2021 at 1:49 pm
Tech question. I'm getting ready to get a stand alone 4k player instead of using my xbox one x. I was wondering if you guys connect your HDMI direct to the tv or pass through your receiver? I've been going through my receiver but I'm going direct once I get a new player. Seen kind of mixed opinions. My receiver supports Dolby vision and HDR10, but I would assume direct would be better.

I've heard nothing but bad reviews on The Gemini Man. Now since it's in your Demo Category I must buy it and watch it. You two really made the movie sound good so I can't wait to watch it. Thank you for all you do for us. It's a real pleasure that you look out for us collectors that don't just "collect" to "collect" but "collect" only "good" movies!!!!!!!

I dont get the hate for Gemini Man either, it is a fun movie with a great performance by Will Smith playing 3 different characters of himself. I would rate it an easy 7 and now I have to buy it on 4K cause it is Demo approved!!

What’s up my awesome 4K critics?

I just read this idiotic statement on Jurassic Park from a 4K blogger on the web --- You ready for this? "a 4K presentation of the 4K restoration, there’s a really visually pleasing amount of film grain preserved which gets pronounced in a very tasteful manner." What the fuck? Are these people stupid?? "tasteful" grain what in the wholly fuck lmfao.

Thankfully you two know what the viewers want!!!! I will only listen to "The BillChete" and "The Lady Phantom" from now on.

Fun bonus episode!! I see both your arguments on Alita BA. It's not a perfect film by no means but I did enjoy it. 7/10 for me.

I think this would be a lower priced 4K Bluray I will seek out based on your B Grades.

I thank you so much for the kind words and finding me here on MOVIES in 4K. It will be my honor to review/rate/grade Zombie on an upcoming Bonus Episode for you. You are definitely correct Zombie is my 5th favorite horror movie ever! And again you’re correct about the price. It is a steep 4K Disc! Happy New Year and thanks so much for listening!

@Tony: Sweet! We agree on a movie, Now You See Me, it is a fun well made flick that is very rewatchable and the good thing is the 4K transfer is great! Thanks for your Vegas pick, I haven’t seen it but heard of it, so I will definitely give it a watch! I typically love any movie set in Vegas, and that one being action oriented I’m excited to see it! Onwards to the superhero recommendations; Yes The Dark Knight is slated on an upcoming Bonus Episode requested by another listener, Shawn Taylor, and since you are highly recommending/requesting one from the X-Men saga, you stated that Days Of Future Past is the best quality and one of Lady Phantom’s blockbuster hits we will choose that one for a Bonus Episode! But please be patient as we have been getting a slew of requests! Thanks again Tony and have a Happy New Year!

I'm back so soon after listening to the new episode.

So you guys are done with the Las Vegas section of the show but if you ever bring it back or just wanna watch a movie set there then check out an awesome movie I love called Harley Davidson & the Marlboro Man from 91. Great fun action movie with that late 80s early 90s feel. Goes back & forth to Las Angeles n Las Vegas & it's on Amazon prime

Good new episode. You can buy 1 & 2 separate or together & I hope there really is gonna be a part 3. I love Morgan Freeman who's also in Nolan's Batman trilogy with Michael Cain which I know we're getting a bonus of the Dark Knight 4K but Morgan Freeman is great in Batman Begins so hopefully Bill will watch it.

For some great 4K films the X-Men movies look amazing as does the original Star Wars trilogy so if you ever get to them do reviews of Empire Strikes Back which looks best in 4K though dialog Is low sound wise for all of them & do X-Men Days Of Futures Past which is the best one though original X-Men is my favorite superhero film..

I thought there was way more comedy and while it was there for sure, it didn’t rise to the level of my teenage years I thought was there. I am seriously glad I own it now, it is a staple in horror. Pertaining to the Phantom falling asleep, don’t take it too harsh as she falls asleep in ALL movies but her FANTASY films, lol. I was actually surprised myself she didn’t like it more because she is a fan of Ash Vs Evil Dead which is so kitschy, but as she exclaimed it wasn’t her flavor of comedy. Bill I'm glad ur happy to have this film in your collection at least & Phantom if ur falling asleep during a movie Idk could you be TIRED!!! We didn't want to spoil any scene in particular because it is a must watch horror flick! FYI: It's pure terror! I'm changing my name to Tony Spilner! Yeah vin with his ego took a lot of control of the series even though it was written for Paul Walker & without Paul being in 2 there is no big time series. It's horrible now & should've ended after his death but money talks & bullcrap walks especially in hollyweird. 7 made 137 million opening weekend with his death & 8 made less then part 6 did opening weekend & part 9 looks like hobbs & show movie (which probably looks great in 4k) 1st one looks best in 4k so the 4k look hasn't been done as good in the rest of em. Evil dead 2 is more goofy than funny. Great film regardless. U can see some grain early especially with matte paintings but looks amazing after that. Haven't seen Batman in 4k yet but Batman forever & Batman & robin look amazing in 4k

@Shawn: Aww, no worries. I understand nostalgia; I really do. I know the look Tim Burton gave to Gotham was completely on purpose, and I still like it. My new found criticism less more in the acting department and in how they chose not to improve on the special effects. I still cringe thinking about the first time we see Batman’s silhouette.
As for the suggestions, please don’t hesitate to recommend anything. It’s not about picking things we’ll like; it’s about finding out if they’re worth upgrading or not. Your requests are always welcome!

Well, I feel like I owe Lady an apology for kicking her nostalgia for Batman Square in the teeth LOL. Full disclosure, I showed it to a friend who isn't into the technical side of movies and my 17yo son. My friend and I are 43, so we loved this movie from childhood. One of the reasons I suggested it was the lower amount of grain. As far as the gloomy, noir look of the movie, that could have been a choice. Batman is supposed to be the World's greatest detective and Gotham city has always been represented as this neo noir place, with modern apsects. Either way, if you take my recommendation ever again, I'll try to pick a better one. Cheers Shawn

Hi. I hope you are staying safe and healthy through these unusual times. I’m truly thankful you let us respond to the podcast. The service you provide through your podcast show is high-quality in audio that’s a treat to the ears. The music interludes alone give a taste of the movie.

Onwards to the Terminator sequel. I, my husband and 2 teenagers can not wait to see the 4K Blu-ray you highly recommended. With your combined experience of 4K movies it will undoubtedly be spectacular. As all the adjectives you could muster about the video quality we purchased the 4K Blu-ray immediately after listening. It was a cheaper disc too, we got it for $11 with tax!

I am shocked you don’t charge for your podcast episodes. Your podcast is well worth a monthly subscription. The reviews and advice are a gem for us 4K converters.

Thank you for your time,

I took my better half to see District 9 in the theater on the second weekend of opening. It had much hype and to our dismay it is and was highly over rated to us. We both hated the docudrama flavor. I agree with Billchete the lead actor was pitiful. I just asked the wife she said she would give it a 3, for me I would go dead center 5.

I intensely want to thank you both for covering oodles of 4K Blurays. You have helped us pick out many worthy movies. Without you they would be hit or miss and a waste of money.

What a predicament Passengers unveils. It’s a decent movie 6/10. The space sets are incredible, one of the best things about the movie. — I had never heard of the Cooler, it sparked my interest as Macy was great in Fargo, I think one of his best roles. In Boogie Nights he should of had a bigger role, but was still good. Him as the lead I’ll definitely check it out.

THANK YOU. As I said in the episode, what’s so good is that, just with regular people, the characters in Coco have virtues and faults. Miguel goes for his dream, and that’s commendable even though his process is not the best, and his family is doing what they think is right, even if their process is not great either. Lol!

Good afternoon Lady Phantom and BillChete!
Long time listener, first time commentor. It almost feels like an honor to just leave a comment on here and be able to interact with you both. Hailing from the SNOWY city of Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, I just wanted to 1. Let you know that I agree with Lady Phantom on her take on the Coco episode, that he is not a problem child and that if you are adamant on fulfilling your dreams l, than you cant let ANYONE get in your way even if those people are your close family members or friends.
And 2. I want to request a few movies for you to cover, the first would be the 4k release of what I find to be a masterpiece and that film is District 9, or since we are gearing up for christmas than maybe covering the 4k release of a christmas movie that just turned 30 years old and that would be Home Alone.
Thanks for the opportunity to leave a comment !
Will be listening closely for all upcoming reviews !
Have a good one and be safe over there on the other side of the border!

Hello

Hi guys my name is Jp and I have never really talked to you guys but back in 2010 or 2011. I was
19 or 20 and not working. I had free time on my hands. So I started renting a lot of movies via Netflix by mail. I had always been a huge horror fan but didn't know anyone else really was. As I started renting more and more horror films I started looking up reviews of the films I watched. I then found a bunch of people on Youtube reviewing and talking about horror. I was shocked there were other people out there who loved horror like I did and in fact that a community existed. I instantly started watching people talk about horror and which only furthered my obsession. Next I was listening to Joe Rogan's podcast and wondered. Is there any horror podcasts out there. I did a quick google search and found a few (No where near the amount today lol) During that search I found Horror Palace. I was hooked. I immediately checked out every show I could find on there. I loved how much of a community it was. Hearing every one doing crossover shows and roundtable discussions on Zombie films vs Slashers was so cool. I learned about so many movie I had never heard of I was amazed at all of these people who shared the love and passion that I did for horror. Among these shows I loved The Weekly Horror Movie Podcast the most. The battles on that show got me fired up and I would want to respond to the points I was hearing. I also loved Terror Troop and Land of the Creeps and Grizzly Zone. I loved on Grizzly zone when you guys would have a younger guest and try to gauge the younger perspective on horror (As I was pretty young myself). Sadly Horror Palace came to an end and I was sad. I eventually found Land of the creeps and Terror Troop online. So I kept up with those shows. Years later I found Jay of the Deads shows. Jay of the Dead and Bill Chete were always my favorite hosts even though I often completely disagree with Bill its still a blast to hear what he has to say. Shortly after the end of Horror Palace I created my own podcast. Since I couldnt listen to my favorite shows I guess I'll make my own. Plus that itch I had to respond to hosts when listening was strong. I needed to get involved and I did. In 2013 I started my show and we are still going. At the end of this month it is 22 Shots Of Moodz and Horrors 7th anniversary. 196 episodes in and I still love it. Bill Chete is a big inspiration to my love of podcasting. Both listening and creating. Anyway enough about me lets talk Movie in 4K. When Jay of the Dead left his last show I was bummed but I was happy when I found out he was doing a new show with Bill Chete and Lady Phantom. I love Horror Movie Weekly but I got a new job and wasnt able to listen much. Now I am binging the old episodes. During my listens I would love when Bill and Phantom mentioned 4K. I have been upgraded for a year and love the format. I have been buying tons of 4Ks. While I used to only buy horror movies on Blu-ray and DVD I been buying every type of movie on 4K. I just now got to the episode of Horror Movie Weekly where Bill and Phantom announced movies in 4K. I was stoked cause I love the format and thought it was an amazing idea for a show. I quickly ran over and listened to a few episodes. I am now 4 episodes in but plan on binge listening to catch up. Great show guys. I love it. I love the format and cant wait to see what else you guys covered. Sorry for rambling. Also I forgot to mention I did get the Horror On The Go when it launched but after an update it stopped working on my phone ( I had an older phone at the time) Now that they are archived I may go back and check out the episodes I missed. Thanks for the years of content I hope you guys continue.

It’s a bummer that another Gibson movie you just covered “Braveheart” isn’t near as good because I would of bought that one too if it was stellar quality, it’s one of my 90’s favorites.

I enjoy your “Grading Scale” as it provides a standard of premium 4K releases, they are expensive in comparison to their DVD counterparts, your podcast is truly an ingenious resource.

You had asked what issues I had with the Blu-ray. Me and my daughter both just thought the picture quality was too grainy. Since we have a cheaper sound bar, I cannot speak of the sound quality on the Blu-Ray, so the problems you guys had with the sound on the 4k wont be an issue with me. You guys had me crying... Honestly though, I presumed that BillChete wouldn't have been a fan but I hoped I was wrong. I knew that Lady Phantom was interested so I chose that one from my cart to give her the opportunity. I haven't watched it again since the theater so I can't really give you an essay about what I liked, but I do remember that Rose the Hat won me over while watching it! She was great! Honestly, if you guys want to get rid of it y'all can drop me a price and I'll PayPal you to take it off your hands, otherwise I'll probably blu ray it... Thank you for covering it and making me feel like I gave a Jay of the Dead pick! Til next time!

@Leonid: FINALLY indeed. It was long in the making.
Yeah, I read about the liver. And Leo being a vegetarian... he’s dedicated alright! Leonid, it’s absolutely worth it. You can always sell the Blu-ray... the 4K is really stunning.
Leonid Leonid from Cruz Bay wrote on October 15, 2020 at 3:31 pm
Leo *finally* got his oscar. Revenant is an outstanding movie I’m 100 percent onboard with your review. Even today I still don’t think this movie gets the love it deserves. It’s masterful.

Fun little fact *when eating internal organs they actually were. A raw bisons liver. Now that’s dedication.

The 4K version sounds amazing. I bought the regular bluray when it came out, is it worth to double dip and get the 4K?

Listened to HMP & Bill you mentioned law abiding citizen & I love that movie! Great kills h the scenes between fox & butler are incredible! Only gripe is the ending isn't as exciting as the rest of the film so that's my only complaint & keeps it from being incredible but still awesome to me. For like a year I've been debating getting the 4k which is only 15 bucks on Amazon but idk if worth getting since I have the blu ray. Maybe u guys will get to it sometime

Btw, Hey Bill I agree it is ridiculous living in a software world, but, but, but you need to let your mind go and enjoy the visuals, a alternate universe so to speak.

I liked the revelation more than all you did but that’s me I don’t like open ended endings. A bummer that the 4K disc isn’t better quality as this is a movie I would like to have on it. Since Jay didn't read my whole message I just have to say that the poltergeist remake is horrible which was the point of having it reviewed to force Bill Chete to watch a garbage movie which would leave to comedy gold unfortunately the movie was so bad Bill u couldn't even get up enough care to destroy it lol & like I said it felt monster house though clearly I was wrong about that. I think cuz both are basically children's films & same director I eqated them together without actually having seen monster house.

I've always been interested in his knowledge of entertainment systems! Anyhow, I'm looking into upgrading to 4k soon and I have a few 4k titles in my Amazon cart that I'm hoping you two someday cover. Thanks guys for the latest episode made in my honor John Wick. I agree with the Phantom on this one! The 1st john wick is my favorite of the three but on 4k 2/3 look better cuz the color of the movies is so pretty. I think Taken & John Wick are pretty even films but Wick takes the series 👑. Haven't seen Rambo but Wick is definitely better than Death Sentence. My big 4K complaint is when the audio commentaries are only on the blu ray cuz why would people wanna watch a less version of the film?! Bill glad you enjoyed your rewatch of the film & Phantom you're welcome for the trilogy he bought you 😋 Good little episode so again thank you both!

Movies in 4K,
It looks like 'Kong Skull Island' is your first kaiju movie review, and I'm really glad you guys liked it so much. I think you guys selected the best of the Legendary Pictures 'MonsterVerse' films to review for this episode. What stands out to me about 'Kong Skull Island' is they finally made a new King Kong story, not another remake—it's been way too many times already with the remakes! In the Legendary Pictures 'MonsterVerse' films I think this one has the best human characters and the best monsters, and a great balance between the humans and monsters.

I'm looking forward to 'Godzilla v Kong' coming up soon!

Thanks duo for another bonus, I was never a fan for Blade Runner, never got the hype.

Keep doing what you are doing it makes buying disks an easier process, easier on the wallet too when you know the disk is worth it, less wasteful for ones not up to snuff.

@Eric: Thank you for your comments. And YES, 9.5. Just as I said, I don’t feel all the music fits. It’s okay if you disagree, but to me, a 10 is perfect.
One thing about the special features: I don’t expect the old stuff to be in 4K, but for that kind of release, they should have filmed new interviews, features, etc.
Thanks again for leaving a comment. We welcome all opinions!

Eric Eric from Ann Arbor, MI wrote on July 30, 2020 at 5:39 am
Hello! I recently discovered Movies in 4k and I've been enjoying the show. I just finished your episode about Jaws, and I have some comments.

First thing's first...Lady Phantom...9.5 WHAT?!?!?! If Jaws isn't a 10, I don't know what is.

As far as BillChete's comments about the Atmos sound...here's the thing. I understand what you're saying about laying out cash and wanting a new experience. However...I think your expectations are unrealistic. Jaws was originally shot with mono sound. The fact they were even able to translate that into a decent surround sound is pretty impressive. The way Atmos is engineered, is that each sound element is mapped out on the screen to move with the action. Trying to do that picking individual sounds out of a mono track is a task I would not envy. I do see your point about why market it as Atmos. At the same time, it sounded like you were slamming on the effort of the mix, and there's only so much you can do with a mono track without essentially recording all the dialog and foley from scratch. Doing so would eliminate much of the profit from the release, and thus a lot of the motivation for them to have the 4k version.

I'm sure you know a lot of this, and I don't mean to mansplain at you...I just think if you keep your expectations in check for older movies that weren't even recorded with a surround sound mix originally, you'll be less disappointed.

The same principal applies to the comments you were making about special features not being in 4k. For movies released in the last 5 years, yes, I can get on board with that complaint. But again, if they're working with older materials like interviews and outtakes, I think it's unrealistic to expect them to restore them to 4k.

Sorry for the lengthy guestbook post, I didn't see an email link or I would have sent this to you that way. I am enjoying the show, and have subscribed to the podcast. I apologize if my first post here seems negative, I hope you take it in the spirit I intended, which is the beginning of a discussion with a fellow movie lover. Keep up the great work!

@Greymouth: Yes that it true almost all players do have 3D support and yes no need to buy an old TV with less than ample specs just for 3D. I hear you! Thanks for the comment and gracious words!
Greymouth Greymouth wrote on July 20, 2020 at 7:05 am
True that on 3D it sucks they sell the discs yet 3D TVs have went the way of the dodo. Even if you find a used one of the 2015-2016 era you wouldn’t want it because the tech has vastly improved, not to mention hdr was in its infancy and didn’t come on them 1st sets. Nuttedly enough 4K players basically come standard with supporting 3D, silly nonsense.

You have a great podcast here, you are my new favorite. Thoroughly interestIn podcast while being wholeheartedly useful for 4K movies.

JJ Abrams cant direct a good star wars/star trek movie to save his life. Gotta watch star trek 2 the wrath of Khan, & star trek first contact. If u like 2 then finish the trilogy with parts 3/4. If you want great star trek watch them but if ur happy with crappy Abrams one's then don't
